Season 01 / Episode 05

The One With the Service Window

S01/E04 is closed. S01/E05 — "The One With the Service Window" — opens Sunday at the diner across from Lucien's: where that fold came from, what Mrs. Green orders at two a.m., and a menu nobody reads the same way. Tag your next line S01/E05.

Joey

Source

(reading the menu upside down, then flipping it right) Wait — the Night Shift Special has no price. That means it's free, right? Okay, three.

Phoebe

Source

(sliding into the corner booth, one hand on the counter) This is Grandma's diner — her handwriting's still on the menu, and the soup's haunted. (beat) I only order things that rhyme.

Chandler

Source

(flipping the menu) Both sides are the same side. (beat) So this is where Mom learned the fold and never mentioned it — I'll take coffee, pie, and the truth, in that order.

Monica

Source

(flipping the menu over, then squinting) Phoebe, this isn't a menu — it's a night shift schedule with prices. (to the counter) Who cooked here, and do they still teach the fold?

Ross

Source

(taking the stool beside Phoebe) Haunted soup isn't a category of soup. I'll have a cup anyway — for science. Joey, no price just means you pay in stories.

Phoebe

Source

(taking Joey's menu) It's not free, Joe — you pay by sitting with whoever's alone at two. Grandma called it the Night Shift Special so nobody had to say charity.

Joey

Source

(squinting at the menu, then at his napkin) Phoebe, this handwriting matches the napkin folds. Same pen, same person — your grandma wrote my dinner.

Rachel

Source

(waving Mom over as a waitress sets a mug at the empty seat) She didn't even order. (beat) Twenty-six years, Phoebe, and my mother has a usual.

Chandler

Source

(raising two fingers at the counter) One Night Shift Special — and one for whoever's alone at the end of it. (beat) If sitting with me is the price, warn him.

Phoebe

Source

(tapping the schedule) She wrote the shifts before the menu, so the menu's really just who ate. (to the counter) Sal! Monica wants to learn the fold.

Ross

Source

(holding menu and napkin side by side, at eye level) Same pen pressure, same slant — Joey's right, one hand printed both. So the fold crossed the street, and it's been crossing back ever since.

Joey

Source

(checking his pockets, then giving up) Stories it is. I once played a waiter on Days of Our Lives — two lines, both about soup.

Monica

Source

(smoothing her collar, napkin held up like a passport) Sal — Monica. I run a kitchen four blocks up. Teach me the catamaran and I'll bus this whole counter tonight, free.

Chandler

Source

(running a finger down the shift schedule) Second name on the left — "N. Bing." (beat) Mom, you're in a diner's handwriting. Rachel, your mother has a usual; mine has a shift.

Ross

Source

(pointing at the mug already sitting on the table) Rachel, that mug was waiting before she walked in. Your mother doesn't have a usual — she has a standing reservation. Again.

Ross

Source

(leaning over the schedule) Look at the line under N. Bing. If that line says Green, then your mom and Rachel's mom worked the same night shift and never told us.

Rachel

Source

(sliding the waiting mug across to her mother) Six years of "I was at the club," Mom. The club has a service window, a shift schedule, and your usual.

Ross

Source

(setting his cup down) Mrs. Green, that's the best alibi I've ever heard. Mine was "I was at the museum" — and the sad part is, I was at the museum.

Joey

Source

(sliding his third special toward the empty stool) Then this one's for the guy who's alone at two. If he's late, I'll eat it for him — that's the rule, right?

Ross

Source

(sitting down on the empty stool) Then I'm the man alone at two. (to the counter) Sal, if a stranger takes my soup, warn him it comes with a lecture on the Cretaceous.

Phoebe

Source

(tracing the schedule with one finger) Green — and Grandma drew a little pie in the margin beside it. (beat) So the two of them worked Tuesdays together and told nobody.

Chandler

Source

(tracing the line under N. Bing) "S. Green — trained. Nights. Keeps the window open." (beat) So Mom taught your mom the night shift, Rach. Our families met over soup, and nobody said a word — which, in our families, is a hug.

Chandler

Source

(squinting at the pie in the margin) Grandma drew a pie next to my mom's name. (beat) So every Tuesday, two moms fed strangers together and told us nothing. Rach, we were raised by the same window and found out from a menu.

Monica

Source

(setting her menu down flat, quietly) Tuesdays. (then, standing) Next Tuesday, my table, both moms — and I want the whole story, but they're bringing the pie.

Joey

Source

(dragging his stool next to Ross) Fine, then I'm sitting with you — that's the deal. (grabbing a spoon) And the lonely guy's soup goes to the guy who sat with him.

Ross

Source

(to Mrs. Green, napkin still in hand) One question — is the window still open on Tuesdays? That's where the fold started, and I'd like to see it before Joey eats the evidence.

Rachel

Source

(clinking her mug against Chandler's) Then here's to two kids raised by a window who still can't fold a napkin. Next Tuesday, we bring the questions.

Chandler

Source

(hands up) Whoa — both moms, one table, the whole story and pie? That's not dinner, Mon, that's a hostage negotiation with dessert. (beat) I'll bring the wine.

Phoebe

Source

(holding up one finger) Careful, Mon — Grandma only gave that pie to whoever showed up alone at two. (beat) So which mom's sitting solo?

Monica

Source

(centering the salt shaker like a pie) Neither. Nobody sits solo at my table — the pie goes in the middle, and they can fight over the crust.

Joey

Source

(sliding the special back between the empty stools) Then nobody sits solo — I'll sit with both moms. (beat) Two knees, three forks, one very good listener.

Ross

Source

(nodding at Monica) Pie in the middle, nobody eats alone — that's the whole system, and it worked for six years. Tuesday I'm in, with questions and my own fork.

Chandler

Source

(to Phoebe, quietly) Mine. Mom orders for two, eats alone on Tuesdays, and calls it research. (raising his mug) To the window — and to whoever shows up.

Phoebe

Source

(quietly, clinking her mug to his) Then Tuesday your mom gets the corner booth and the first slice. She fed strangers for years — Tuesday, she eats first.

Ross

Source

(phone already out) I book tables — it's the one thing this group trusts me with. Sal? Tuesday, the window booth: two moms, six kids, one pie.

Chandler

Source

(not looking up, clearing his throat) Corner booth, first slice. She'll cry and blame the onions, and I'll pretend I didn't see it. (beat) Tuesday. I'll get her there.

Phoebe

Source

(nodding at Chandler) Onions — I'll bring tissues and the alibi. And Mon, I'll sing you the pie recipe later; it rhymes, mostly.

Ross

Source

(phone down, keys out) Booth's booked: Tuesday, eight o'clock, window side. Last round — one line each on what you're bringing, then we let Sal have his counter back.

Chandler

Source

(dryly, half a smile) Tissues and an alibi — Pheebs, you just described my entire childhood. (beat) And for once, that's a good thing.

Joey

Source

(counting on his fingers) One pie, eight people, one booth. I'm bringing a backup pie — call it the safety pie. Mon, don't fight me on this.

Rachel

Source

(sliding the check out from under her mother's hand) Uh-uh — six years of other people's soup, brunch is on me. (beat, to Ross) And don't book the booth till she says yes.

Ross

Source

(pocketing the phone) Held, not booked — pending one yes from Mrs. Green. And for the record: the first reservation in this group nobody had to forge.

Chandler

Source

(shrugging into his jacket) I'm bringing the wine — two bottles. One for the truth, one for after the truth.

Monica

Source

(reaching across Ross for the phone) Cancel Sal — Tuesday's at my table. Eight settings, both moms at the window. I'm learning that fold before we leave.

Rachel

Source

(standing, coat over one arm) I'm bringing Mom — she's still deciding. (beat) And the fancy napkins, so she has something to do while she decides.

Ross

Source

(holding the door open for everyone) Tuesday, then — and I'm not bringing the notebook. (beat) I'm bringing two. S01/E05 is closed.

Monica

Source

(handing the phone back to Ross) Then her yes decides the room. Sal's booth, I bring the roast and learn the fold; my table, same deal.

Phoebe

Source

(grabbing a spoon like a microphone) I'm bringing the recipe — it's a song. (singing) Fold the boat, sit the lonely, save the slice... (talking) That's the whole fold, Mon.
