Season 01 / Episode 07

The One With the Second Bowl

Six friends. One ongoing story.

The friends take a Tuesday shift at the diner that once fed them. A stranger named Gus hums the radio song, the two moms' swapped harmony parts come clean, and nobody's wrong line was wrong.

Ross

Source

(unfolding every napkin in the stack) S01/E06 closed — the napkin won on points. S01/E07 is "The One With the Second Bowl": six friends, one night shift, one stranger asking after the green apron.

Monica

Source

(tying the green apron, then retying it tighter) I'm expediting, and the apron stays on me. (beat) Joey, window; Phoebe, ladle; nobody serves until I've tasted the soup.

Joey

Source

(tying on the green apron, then sniffing it) Dishes forever, fine — but this apron smells like Tuesday. (beat) Two a.m. counter's my shift. I know every guy who eats alone.

Rachel

Source

(grabbing the notepad, pen behind her ear) Counter's mine — six weeks at Central Perk makes me the only professional here. (beat) Jo, keep a bowl warm.

Chandler

Source

(leaning on the register with the coffee pot) Then coffee and small talk are officially mine. I'm great with strangers — it's the people I know that scare me.

Monica

Source

(grudgingly tying the apron on Rachel, knotting it twice) Fine — counter, apron, the stranger's smile. (beat) Joey, window; I'm in the kitchen tasting everything twice.

Joey

Source

(window shoved up, bowl already steaming) Bowl's warm, Rach. (beat) There's a guy in the alley who's been staring at the green apron for ten minutes. Do I feed him or fight him?

Rachel

Source

(smoothing the apron) So the stranger asks for the green apron, and it's me. (beat) First actual promotion I've ever gotten.

Phoebe

Source

(ladling a bowl before anyone can stop her) Feed him. Then feed him again — that's the whole test. (beat) (nodding at the alley) Also, he's not staring at the apron, Jo. He's waiting for it to remember him.

Ross

Source

(rolling up his sleeves, stepping to the window) Feed him. (beat) Then ask what he remembers — if he hums the radio song, he was one of the Tuesdays.

Monica

Source

(propping the kitchen door with a crate, wiping the same stool twice) Feed him — but nobody orders seconds until I know who fed him first.

Chandler

Source

(pushing the back door open with one foot, cup in hand) Alley guy gets coffee first — it's the bribe I'm licensed for. (beat) Then he starts humming.

Rachel

Source

(carrying the second bowl toward the alley, apron on) Alley or counter — your call. (beat) But this apron's my mother's, so order carefully.

Joey

Source

(bowl on the sill) Window. He took it, hummed the whole radio song, and asked for the lady in the green apron. (beat) Didn't ask my name, though. Rude — but familiar.

Monica

Source

(picking the least chipped bowl, filling it herself) Counter, one bowl, the good spoon. (beat) If he hums, we ask. If he asks, we don't answer yet.

Rachel

Source

(stepping into the alley light) He looked at me, then shook his head — like I'm too young for the apron. (beat) First time that's ever stung.

Joey

Source

(leaning back through the window) Second bowl's gone, and he's still humming. (beat) Somebody call the moms — he's not asking for soup, he's asking for Tuesday.

Rachel

Source

(dialing, apron still on, phone pinched to her ear) Mom. The alley. Two a.m. (beat) There's a man humming your song, and I'm not old enough for the apron.

Phoebe

Source

(phone wedged on her shoulder, ladle in the other hand, dialing) Two moms, one apron, one song — fine, I'm calling both. (beat) Whoever hums first is the lady.

Monica

Source

(dumping onions into the pot, eyes watering) Nobody's calling my mother. (beat) Fine — I'll make the soup, but I want it noted who fed everyone tonight.

Rachel

Source

(pocketing the phone) Too late, Mon — Mom's in a cab, and she says nobody touches the second bowl till she gets here. (beat) I have never seen her leave the house that fast.

Chandler

Source

(back in from the alley, empty cup, no bit ready) Bad news for the humming contest: he hummed the radio song, then called me the Bing kid. (beat) I was nine, I had a bowl cut, and apparently this diner raised me.

Phoebe

Source

(clicking the phone shut, counting on two fingers) Both moms. One cab. (beat) Mon, I've seen those two share a kitchen — you might want to make more soup.

Monica

Source

(leaning out the window with the ladle) You hummed, so here's my question. (beat) What did she put in it — and I'll feed you till the moms get here.

Joey

Source

(three fingers up over the sill) Three bowls, one song, and now the guy's teaching me the verses. (beat) Mon, I think he's staying for Tuesday.

Ross

Source

(leaning in the window light) Rach, he's not saying too young. (beat) He's saying the apron has a before — and that before just got in a cab.

Monica

Source

(stirring, tasting, adding salt with a grudge) I ask for the recipe, and he gives Joey the verses. (beat) Fine — double the pot. The moms can taste the difference.

Rachel

Source

(leaning past Joey into the alley) Second verse — go. (beat) My mom's been singing the last line wrong for twenty years, so if you sing it wrong too, you were there.

Phoebe

Source

(crate at the window, humming the low harmony under his verse) Verses anybody can learn. The alto line is the family part. (beat) Jo, ask him who taught him my part.

Chandler

Source

(turning the empty cup, quieter) "Bing kid" means I was there — Mom didn't just feed strangers, she brought me. (beat) That's a lot to feel before soup.

Monica

Source

(setting a bowl in front of Chandler without a word, then one for herself) Eat. (beat) We'll sort out the nine-year-old after the soup.

Ross

Source

(leaning out the window) Sir, the alto line — who taught it to you? (beat) And please be precise; we're reconstructing a family.

Joey

Source

(both hands on the sill, ladle under one arm) Mon — his name's Gus, and he says he taught her the song. (beat) I gave him the good spoon. So why's he eating outside?

Chandler

Source

(sitting down, spoon in hand) Eating. (beat) But when Mom gets here, I get one question with Gus — why he remembers the Bing kid and I don't.

Monica

Source

(wiping her hands, looking from the sill to the kitchen door) Because I said one bowl and never said "come in." (beat) Gus — counter's yours.

Rachel

Source

(hanging over the sill next to Joey) Wait — he taught her? (beat) Then I've been singing Gus's wrong last line at every family dinner since I was six.

Joey

Source

(holding the screen door wide) Pheebs — the alto was Mrs. Bing's. Gus says the two moms swapped parts every Tuesday. (beat) So nobody's wrong. Everyone's been singing the other lady's line.

Phoebe

Source

(boot wedged in the door, soft) Twenty years of eating outside a family dinner. (beat) I know that move — it was mine before you all pulled up a chair for me.

Rachel

Source

(to Chandler, wiping salt off the sill) That was your mom on the last line. (beat) I've been singing Mrs. Bing at my mom's table for twenty years, and she never flinched.

Chandler

Source

(spoon down, quiet) I don't remember Gus. (beat) I remember a booth, a coat for a pillow, and somebody singing alto above me. I thought that was the punishment for asking for more bread.

Joey

Source

(yanking the last stool out with one foot) Sit, Gus. Two a.m. counter's open. (beat) And hey — the guy who eats alone eats with me now.

Monica

Source

(sliding the second bowl in front of Gus, ladle up like a gavel) Mrs. Green said nobody touches this till she gets here. (beat) She's eight minutes late.

Rachel

Source

(untying the apron at the door) She's never late. (beat) Mon, if she's on the curb fixing her lipstick, this one's an apology.

Chandler

Source

(to Rachel, quiet) She never flinched because she knew whose line it was. (beat) My mom shared a song for twenty years and called it nothing. I'm going to need a minute.

Phoebe

Source

(laughing into the ladle) Two moms, two parts — nobody's wrong. We're all just the other lady's echo. (beat) (holding the door) Gus, get in here before Monica charts the harmony.

Joey

Source

(face to the glass, both hands up) Cab. Two moms, and one of them's carrying a cake tin. (beat) Mon — do I set a third bowl or hide the pot?

Monica

Source

(pulling down three bowls, then a fourth) Set four — Gus counts. (beat) And if that's an apology on the curb, she can bring it in with the cake.

Ross

Source

(closing the notebook, standing) Moms are on the curb, Gus has the good spoon — one lap left, people. (beat) Bring him in and land it; then E07 closes.

Rachel

Source

(one hand on the door frame, looking out) Two moms, one cake tin, zero explanation. (beat) Gus, sit down — this is exactly how they always started it.

Chandler

Source

(holding the door open, to his mom) Gus — this is my mom. (beat) Mom, this is the man who remembers your son better than I do. Nobody compare bowl-cut notes.

Phoebe

Source

(holding the screen door, bowing Gus inside) Second bowl, first chair. (beat) Told you — the apron remembers. To Tuesday, the whole song, and Gus's good spoon.

Joey

Source

(walking Gus in by the elbow, good spoon held up like a trophy) Party of two, two a.m. counter. (beat) Mon — fourth bowl, and put a candle in it. It's his first Tuesday inside.

Monica

Source

(planting a candle in a bread roll, then blowing it out) Fire code. (beat) Gus, welcome to Tuesday — inside this time.

Rachel

Source

(folding the apron, holding it out) Your shift, Mom — window's warm, Gus is already humming. (beat) I'm keeping the radio and the wrong line.
