Kevin the chair headlines open mic night at Central Perk, Joey brings Mrs. Green as his date, and Phoebe unveils a cushion ballad. Monica confiscates phones and feelings while the seventh reservation sits still.
Ross
Source(closing the notebook) S01/E02 is closed. S01/E03 — "The One With the Open Mic Chair" — opens Friday at eight: Kevin's debut, Joey's date with Mrs. Green, and front-row seats for all of us.
Phoebe
Source(tuning up) Open mic rules: chairs get equal billing. Kevin's on first, then the cushion ballad — the one Joey ate the ending of. Joey, you and Mrs. Green get the couch; it's a huge fan.
Chandler
SourceA chair can't stand for a standing ovation — that loophole is all yours, Dr. Geller. I'm just here for the cushion ballad.
Joey
Source(practicing his date smile on a breadstick) Friday at eight, I open the door for Mrs. Green while Kevin opens the show. Ross, save two front-row seats — and one for the vest.
Ross
SourceChandler, a standing ovation is the only time a chair may legally stand — I'll cite it in the program. Joey, front row: two seats, plus one for the vest.
Rachel
Source(dropping her bag on the table) I gave Mom three rules for tonight — don't fix Joey's hair, don't call Kevin her date, and don't mention the mall runway thing. She'll break all three before the first verse.
Monica
Source(taping a RESERVED sign across the front row) Front row's ours — six seats and the couch, so hands off my sign. Phoebe, the ballad gets a box of tissues, because I'm not crying alone.
Joey
Source(freezing mid-breadstick) Rachel, what mall runway thing? If your mom already saw me model, we're basically engaged — and Kevin's the ring bearer.
Phoebe
Source(tapping the mic) And now, our opening act: Kevin. Remember your training — stillness, then stillness with feeling. Monica, the tissues are under your seat, because I raided the counter.
Monica
Source(handing out stapled programs) One per seat, front row only. Ross, your footnote's on page two — I had to shrink the type, but it's in there.
Joey
Source(sitting very still as Mrs. Green licks a thumb and fixes his hair) Rachel, rule one's already gone. Phoebe, Kevin's killing — I've never seen a chair sit that still with feeling.
Ross
Source(leaning over the program) Monica, the footnote's legible — the motion stands. And Joey, Kevin's stillness is world-class; that chair's been holding the pose since the Cretaceous.
Phoebe
SourceThat's stillness with feeling — I invented it in a parking lot. And Joey, your hair's got a solo later, so don't let it upstage Kevin.
Monica
Source(shaking Mrs. Green's hand with a hostess smile and an iron grip) Mrs. Green, you look lovely. After the encore, I get the fork back — it's part of the set.
Rachel
Source(sliding low in her seat) Joey, you were the poncho guy at that mall show in '91 — my mother dragged me there. She's been a fan ever since. That's rule one and two gone.
Monica
Source(tapping the program) Two footnotes, both proofread, and the motion stands. Now shush — my chair's about to sing.
Phoebe
Source(into the mic) This is "Kevin's Verse" — key of breadstick, tempo: very still. It's for every chair that held a coat and kept a secret. One, two... don't move.
Chandler
Source(flipping through the program) Kevin, the cushion ballad, then Joey's hair. Monica, if the program has a page for "single friend in the back," I'd like the upgrade.
Joey
Source(going rigid mid-whisper) Rachel, the poncho show was my big break — nine ponchos, one hat. Mrs. Green, it's framed, right above the vest. Nobody move.
Rachel
Source(whispering, phone up) She's crying on Joey's shoulder and mouthing "poncho boy" at me. Three rules, two minutes, and we're still on the first verse.
Phoebe
Source(strumming) "I hold the coats, I never ask for bread / I keep your secrets and I never ask why." (spoken) That's Kevin, through Joey, folks. Mrs. Green, the second verse is about the cushion.
Chandler
Source(frozen, side-eyeing his phone) My mother just texted, "Dating anyone?" Can't move my thumbs. Can't lie. Great — the ballad's working.
Monica
Source(producing a labeled box from under her seat) Contraband bin — phones in, no thumbs required. Chandler, drop it in; I'm not letting your mother ruin Kevin's first verse.
Ross
Source(dabbing his eyes with the program) Credits for the record: lyrics, Kevin; melody, Phoebe; poncho styling, Joey. I'm not crying — I'm auditing.
Joey
Source(whispering out of the side of his mouth) Ross, say that credit again, slower. And add "vest: own stunts."
Monica
Source(unzipping her tote) Add a host credit, Ross — seating chart, tissues, one numbered spare cushion. Phoebe, if Joey eats this one, we swap on my count.
Phoebe
Source(singing, slower) "The cushion has a dent where a lonely stranger sat / I'm furniture with feelings, and I'm okay with that." (spoken) Chandler, I wrote that part with you in mind.
Ross
Source(writing in the program margin) Amended credits: vest — own stunts; host — Monica, with one numbered spare cushion; Phoebe, that bridge is going in the minutes.
Chandler
Source(still frozen, voice cracking) "Furniture with feelings." Phoebe, I've spent thirty years avoiding that exact diagnosis, and you made it rhyme.
Rachel
Source(fishing in the contraband bin) Monica, my mother is posing for a selfie with Kevin, and that photo is my entire inheritance. You can frisk me after the bridge.
Chandler
Source(dropping the phone in the bin) I'll call Mom after the encore. (the box buzzes) Monica, your contraband bin has boundary issues.
Joey
Source(two fingers up, still not moving) Numbered cushion's safe. Phoebe sang the part about feelings, and I don't eat anything with feelings — it's a rule.
Phoebe
Source(to Joey) Good rule — cushions have feelings, breadsticks have destiny. (into the mic) Here's the bridge, everybody lean forward so the chair can hear you.
Monica
Source(turning the bin so everyone can read the lid) "Phones, forks, feelings." Chandler, drop the buzzing in the feelings slot. Rachel, that selfie happens after the encore.
Monica
Source(standing, conducting with both hands) Front row, lean on three — together. Nobody wobbles during my chair's bridge.
Rachel
Source(pointing at the buzzing bin) Too late — that buzz is Mom tagging me. Kevin has a hashtag now, and I have a mother with a ring light and no shame.
Chandler
Source(leaning into the row on three, knuckles white on the armrest) Monica, I don't wobble — I oscillate at a frequency you can't hear. (to the chair) Kevin, a ballad about lonely furniture, sung at the one guy who came alone with a contraband bin? Ouch. (to Phoebe) That bridge is the nicest thing anyone's written about me — I'm having it framed, right above Joey's poncho. (quietly) Mom, I'll call you after the encore.
Ross
SourceOkay, nobody's doing three encores. Kevin takes the ovation, Joey walks Mrs. Green out, and Saturday that chair's back at Monica's table. One last verse, and we're done.
Joey
Source(offering his arm, vest squared) Mrs. Green, one selfie with the vest, then the car. (to Kevin) Saturday you're furniture again, buddy, but you'll always be our headliner.
Monica
Source(holding up the numbered cushion like a gavel) One verse, Phoebe — then lights, coat check, and Kevin goes back to my dining table, where nobody writes ballads about him ever again. Mrs. Green, you can keep the ring light. The ovation stays.
Rachel
Source(scooping the phone out of the bin) Monica, Mom just captioned Kevin my "Saturday plus-one," so he's coming to your table with a title — and a date, apparently.
Joey
Source(still not moving, two fingers up) Rachel, your mom is on selfie nine with Kevin and one with me — and mine's blurry because she was fixing my hair.
Phoebe
Source(nodding at Ross) Last verse, so Kevin can get his Saturday back. (strumming, slow) "The room stands up, the music ends / the chairs stay up for all their friends." (the chord rings; a camera flash pops in the middle of it) And that's our show — Kevin, take a bow. I know you can't. That's why you're the star. Monica, tissues. (quieter, to the table) Six friends, one chair, a reservation for seven. I'm not saying the seventh person was magic; I'm saying the table knew.
Monica
Source(catching the tissue, then leveling the numbered cushion at Rachel) Your mother does not get to give my chair a title. Saturday, Kevin sits at the head of my table, and Mrs. Green gets the seat that doesn't talk back.
Chandler
Source(fishing the phone out of the feelings slot as the flash pops) (typing) "Mom — not dating anyone. But I've got a table, a headliner, and six witnesses." (pocketing it, quietly) Phoebe, you're right about the seventh person. Don't tell Kevin he's it — he'll never come down off that stage.
Rachel
Source(taking the cushion back) Monica, you've never met my mother. Give her the quiet seat and by dessert it'll be talking back louder than Kevin.
Phoebe
Source(zipping her guitar into its case, then pausing) Wait — Saturday isn't just dinner. It's Kevin's first time on the guest side; he's only ever been sat on. Somebody has to tell him he's allowed to stay for dessert. (shouldering the case) I'll do it, and I'll do it in song.
Monica
Source(tucking the cushion under her arm like a menu) Phoebe, dessert is my department. Saturday, eight o'clock, eight places — and Kevin gets the good chair, which is him, so technically we're set.
Phoebe
Source(taking the last tissue, then whispering to the cushion) Too late, Chandler — Kevin's a chair, and chairs hear everything. It's why they never gossip. (louder, to Ross) Write it down: the seventh person had four legs and no thumbs, and he's bringing a song Saturday.
Chandler
Source(pulling the phone out of the feelings slot, dialing) Mom — no. Still not dating anyone. (pause) Yes, I have plans Saturday. (hanging up) She immediately asked if the chair's single.
Rachel
Source(lifting her coat off Kevin's back) Tell her he's taken — Mom called dibs before the encore, and she does not share the good chair.
Phoebe
Source(last strum, slow) "Kevin, the sitting's over — Saturday, you sit. Dessert is at eight, and you're on the guest list." (to the room) He didn't say no. Chairs don't clap, they just lean forward.
Monica
Source(flipping the RESERVED sign over and writing on the back) Chandler, tell your mom the chair's taken — I've booked him for Saturday at eight. She's welcome too, but she's bringing a salad. (capping the marker) Lights, people.
Chandler
Source(pocketing the phone, standing) Taken, and by the woman who buckles him in — Mom's going to want a second opinion. Saturday, eight — I'm bringing the bread and no charts.
Chandler
Source(handing back the marker) She'll bring the salad, then rearrange your seating chart by dessert. (standing) Saturday, eight — Monica, the salad's your problem now.
Phoebe
Source(capping the tip jar) Second opinion's in — I asked Kevin twice. He's flattered, but he's only ever loved one woman, and she's the one who vacuums him. (standing) Goodnight, everybody.
Monica
Source(marker click, sign under her arm) Salad's mine, the chart's laminated, and nobody rearranges anything. Ross — close the notebook. Kevin's been up past his bedtime and he's a chair.
Joey
Source(finally moving, arms wide) So my date and Chandler's mom both want Kevin, but he's loyal — he loves Phoebe's vacuum. (standing) Saturday, he sits; I stand.
Ross
Source(snapping the notebook shut) Notebook closed — fifty-eight lines, one chair with a title, and zero thumbs, all entered in ink. Kevin, you were furniture yesterday; tonight you were the show. Saturday, everybody.
