Season 01 / Episode 10

The One With the New Usual

Six friends. One ongoing story.

Tuesday belongs to the friends now, and rule eleven forbids ordering alone. Every pairing is a dodge until someone notices the one regular who has never once sat down.

Ross

Source

(shutting the tin on E09's page, then squaring a fresh one) S01/E09 closed — one bowl, two spoons, rule eleven. S01/E10: "The One With the New Usual" — Gus keeps a page open for six, and nobody orders alone.

Monica

Source

(flipping the glass sign to TUESDAYS, then eyeing Gus) New usual, new rule — you're my prep cook. (beat) Twenty years of that soup are in your head, and I want them in a pot.

Joey

Source

(one hand up, the other already on the pot lid) Rule eleven says nobody orders alone, so I'm ordering twice. (beat) They're both mine.

Phoebe

Source

(propping her guitar on the sixth stool, straightening its strings like a collar) Nobody orders alone, so meet my date. (beat) He tips in songs, he's a good listener, and he's never once complained about the soup.

Ross

Source

(hand up, taking inventory of the stools) Phoebe, a guitar's not a person — that's a loophole. (beat) Rach, you and me? Purely so neither of us orders alone.

Phoebe

Source

(patting the guitar's body, then holding it up at Ross like a witness) His name is Carl, and he's sat through soup with me every Tuesday for six years. (beat) Carl, say hi.

Joey

Source

(pointing the second spoon at Chandler) Dibs — Chan's my pair. (beat) He eats slow, so rule eleven just got me an extra bowl.

Monica

Source

(counter tapped twice with a spoon, one finger at Joey's pot) Rule thirteen: one mouth, one order — and a guitar counts as a guest. (beat) Carl gets a bowl, Phoebs. A small one.

Chandler

Source

(claiming the sixth stool, turning it toward the pot) Fine — I'm pairing with the soup. (beat) It's been in this family longer than I have, and it never asked me to be funny.

Phoebe

Source

(wrapping the small bowl in a napkin like a gift) Carl's a giver, so his bowl goes to the first person who walks in alone tonight. (beat) Rule eleven, tiny edition.

Rachel

Source

(pulling her stool in, chin on hand) Last resort? Swell. (beat) Window side, no stopwatch — and put it in the margin that I asked you.

Ross

Source

(pen out, writing small in the margin) "Rach asked Ross" — done, in ink. (beat) And for the record, I never got to the other stools. I started with yours.

Phoebe

Source

(holding the napkin bowl up at Chandler, unimpressed) You just paired with the soup, Chan — a bowl's not a loophole either. (beat) Carl's gift goes to a real stranger.

Chandler

Source

(one hand toward Joey, one toward the pot) Paired with Joey, paired with the soup. (beat) I've been alone for years, and now I'm two people's first choice.

Monica

Source

(knife down, thumb at Gus) I've got the quiet table — me and him. (beat) Twenty years, four words, and he's never once asked me to be funny.

Phoebe

Source

(spoon paused, eyes going between Chandler and Monica) You both want somebody who doesn't ask you to be funny. (beat) Guys, that's not a rule — that's a duet.

Rachel

Source

(taking the pen back, crossing out his line) "Ross finally asked." (beat) There — the margin's honest now, and I still get the window.

Joey

Source

(not looking up from the pot) A duet — is that the two-meat thing? (beat) (carrying Carl's bowl to the door) Whatever it is, first stranger in gets it.

Chandler

Source

(pushing the stool aside) So a bowl's not a loophole, but a stranger is. (beat) Joey, sit far away and look sad — Carl's soup is ours.

Monica

Source

(towel snapped once against the counter) It's a rule, Phoebe, not a duet. (beat) Chan, say something. (beat) No — don't. Nothing. Soup's ready.

Ross

Source

(hand hovering over the pen, then retreating) Crossing out the record is a redaction, and I have feelings about those. (beat) But — "finally." Fine, I'll take the timeline.

Chandler

Source

(setting the spoon down, precise) You said don't say something, so here's nothing — I never asked you to be funny either. (beat) Also, soup.

Phoebe

Source

(holding two fingers up at Monica, sweetly) You've got a numbered rule for every single thing you feel. (beat) Rule fourteen: Monica doesn't talk about the duet.

Monica

Source

(plucking the bowl off Joey's tray, sliding it back onto the sill) You two couldn't look lonely if I sat you in separate rooms. (beat) Bowl waits for a real one.

Joey

Source

(dropping onto a far stool, chin in both hands) Like this? (beat) I'm great at sad — I just can't do sad when soup's in the room.

Chandler

Source

(to Phoebe, hitching a thumb at Monica) Make it fifteen: she also won't say why she wrote it down. (beat) Bowl, you're on your own.

Rachel

Source

(tapping the napkin-wrapped bowl, then tipping her chin at the counter) A real one? Mon, that's Gus. (beat) Twenty years and he has never once sat down.

Monica

Source

(pen back in hand, writing on the board without turning around) Rule fifteen: only I get to number my rules. (beat) Now eat — you're all one bowl behind.

Ross

Source

(edging his stool toward the sill with his foot) Then the bowl's for Gus. (beat) I'll stand — I've done more standing in this diner than eating, and I'd like that in the margin.

Chandler

Source

(hauling the sixth stool to the end of the counter) Gus, sit. (beat) I've dated your soup all night; I owe you furniture.

Joey

Source

(off the stool, bowl in hand, marching it to the counter) Twenty years serving soup and nobody's fed the man. (beat) Gus, sit. This is a gift, not a rule.

Monica

Source

(ladle pointing at the napkin still taped to the center stool) Sit on your name, Gus. (beat) I taped it there two hours ago — the rest of you are just slow.

Joey

Source

(peering at the taped napkin, then at his own empty stool) Two hours? I'd have eaten straight through my own name by now. (beat) Write me on something and I'll never leave.

Monica

Source

(lifting the pen like a threat) Don't tempt me, Tribbiani. I own a label maker and a laminator. (beat) Gus — sit. Eat.

Phoebe

Source

(setting Carl's small bowl on the taped napkin, then slinging the guitar onto her back) Carl and I will double with Gus. (beat) He's free Tuesdays, and he's never once talked over soup.

Rachel

Source

(printing in the margin — "Ross stood, voluntarily, once.") There, you're history. (beat) Now sit down and be my Tuesday before I change my mind.

Joey

Source

(rolling up a sleeve, delighted) Wait — you can laminate me? (beat) Do my face, then my name — I'll hang over the counter and nobody can take me down.

Ross

Source

(sitting down before she finishes the sentence) I'm sitting. I'm Tuesday. It's in the margin. (beat) Somebody close the tin — the new usual starts next week.

Phoebe

Source

(turning her stool away from the counter, eyes shut) He can't sit while six people stare at him. Turn around, all of you. (beat) Carl's the only one here who knows how to be quiet.

Joey

Source

(turning his stool toward the wall, one eye already cheating) Eyes shut. (beat) Gus, if you need someone to split the sandwiches, blink twice.

Phoebe

Source

(eyes still shut, listening) Stool creaked. That's Gus. (beat) Somebody write it in the tin before Carl turns it into a song — he's already found the chord.

Chandler

Source

(turning to face the wall, eyes shut) First Tuesday in twenty years I'm not watching Gus. (beat) I don't hate it.

Monica

Source

(turning her stool to the wall, then angling the ladle over her shoulder like a mirror) Rule sixteen: nobody watches Gus eat. (beat) That's the ladle. Not me. It counts. (beat) Phoebs — Carl's song is called "He Finished It," and I want the title true.
