Gus sat down and spoke one sentence in front of witnesses, and nobody agrees what he said. Six signed napkins, a 1.4-second pause, and Monica's recipe box follow.
Ross
Source(turning back around, pen already out) S01/E10 closed — Gus sat, and I have it in ink. S01/E11: "The One With the Whole Sentence" — he said something, and nobody agrees what.
Rachel
Source(pad down, hand up like a witness) Whole sentence, right here: "No more rules." (beat) I heard it, and I was closer to the counter than anybody.
Phoebe
Source(one chord, eyes closed) I heard him — I was the only one not looking. (beat) He said "Tuesday tastes like this." Mon, the song's called "He Tasted It."
Joey
Source(hand up, sure) He said "more breadsticks." (beat) I was facing the wall, but my stomach was facing Gus.
Ross
Source(pen out, flipping to the tin's fresh page) For the record, my transcript says "You're all still here." (beat) Rachel, take it up with the tin.
Chandler
Source(turning back around, squinting at Gus) He said, "Stop writing my name on things." (beat) I'd argue, but I renamed that stool Chandler an hour ago.
Monica
Source(marker out, printing MY VERSION under the specials) Gus asked about the pot. That's a compliment, and it gets the biggest font. (beat) Tuesday — same pot, same stools, nobody talks over the sentence. Winner gets laminated.
Phoebe
Source(pointing round the counter with her pick) Look — everybody heard themselves. (beat) Rach heard no rules, Joe heard breadsticks, Chan heard his own name. Gus just said Tuesday.
Phoebe
Source(leaning in close to Gus, hand cupped near his ear) Gus. Just me. Say the Tuesday thing again. (beat) Everybody here heard their own name in it but you put the whole week in mine.
Rachel
Source(sliding the pad across, page butter-stained) Written in ink, mid-sentence. (beat) Laminate mine, Mon — and Tuesday loses its rulebook.
Monica
Source(pen out, sliding a napkin under every stool, Gus's included) Rule seventeen: write your version, sign your version. (beat) Gus picks the true one at closing and the rest of you buy Tuesday. (beat) No private takes, Phoebe — he's not a jukebox.
Ross
Source(printing in block capitals, then signing, dating and initialling the napkin) "You're all still here." Signed, witnessed, footnote one. (beat) I also wrote a dissent.
Monica
Source(signing her napkin, squaring it against the counter edge) Mine's written, dated, in ink. (beat) Rach — if Tuesday loses the rulebook, it's just a night with the same soup. (beat) Fine, I'll take the demotion. Somebody still has to hand out spoons.
Phoebe
Source(writing one line on her napkin, then folding it small) I'm signing mine Carl — he's the only one here who didn't hear anything. (beat) Whoever wins, Gus keeps the napkin.
Joey
Source(pen between his teeth, signing his napkin) "More breadsticks." Joey T. (beat) Ross, why's yours got a dissent in it? It was one sentence and Gus said it slow.
Ross
Source(flipping the napkin to the dissent side, deeply reasonable) Body of the dissent: the pause. (beat) "You're all still" — long pause — "here." Joey, that's two sentences, and I have a diagram.
Monica
Source(collecting the signed napkins, then stopping cold, pen in the air) Phoebe, Carl can't sign — he's a guitar. That one's void. (beat) And if Chandler's version is the true one, then an hour ago I taped Gus's name to a stool and handed him paperwork. (beat) Somebody take mine off his stool before he reads it.
Joey
Source(peering at the diagram, upside down) Ross, I'm an actor — that's a comma, not a period. (beat) Two sentences means two orders, and I only got one basket.
Chandler
Source(peeling the taped napkin off the stool, pocketing it) Held in escrow. (beat) It's out of sight, Mon — and I take bribes in soup.
Monica
Source(stopwatch up, thumb hovering, eyes on Gus) Pause: one point four seconds. That's a rest, not a period. (beat) One sentence, one order, one basket — Joey eats. (beat) Ross, put the diagram in the tin, where it can't hurt anybody.
Monica
Source(hand out for the napkin, then slowly closing it) Escrow, then — but the good bowl, once, after he reads. (beat) And Ross, when you file that pause, it's my stopwatch and my ruling. Sign me.
Phoebe
Source(lifting Monica's napkin off Gus's stool, dusting the salt off on her sleeve) Carl can't sign, but he can witness — he heard the rest, which is more than Ross's diagram did. (beat) One point four seconds, Mon, and every one of us filled it with ourselves. That's not a loophole, that's a band. (beat) So the paperwork goes in the soup, the diagram goes in the tin, you keep the spoons — spoons were never the rulebook — and Gus keeps all six napkins, void one included. Six versions of Tuesday is just a week.
Joey
Source(fist pump, then pointing at Chandler's pocket) One basket, mine. (beat) And Chan just took Gus's napkin — that's evidence, buddy. Ask Ross, evidence doesn't go in pants.
Ross
Source(folding the diagram in half, then handing it over) Signed. One point four, your stopwatch, your ruling. (beat) I'd still like the record to show I had it at one point six.
Rachel
Source(tearing the page out of her pad, folding it into Gus's stack) Fine — my sentence sleeps in the tin with Ross's diagram. (beat) But the "no" was definitely his.
Phoebe
Source(two fingers out, walking them hand-to-hand through the air) Napkin went from Gus's stool to my hand to Chandler's pants — call it a handoff, call it a heist, but that's a terrible venue. (beat) It goes in the tin, with your page and Ross's diagram. Gus gets the bowl. (beat) And the pause goes to whoever's still humming it, which is me. I'm humming it.
Chandler
Source(hand flat over the pocket, to Joey) It's a napkin, Joe, not a murder weapon. (beat) Prints belong to Monica, and she's paying me the good bowl, so it's our crime now.
Monica
Source(pressing the folded diagram flat inside the tin lid) Spoons stay mine. Good. (beat) Ross measured from the moment his own mouth opened, which is a known bias. (beat) One point four — and Tuesday I re-run it. Same pot, same pause, and I start the clock on the sill.
Joey
Source(hand up, already in) A band? Pheebs, I'm in. (beat) I'll do the part before the songs where somebody says the name. Listen — "He Tasted It," by Phoebe. Good, right?
Joey
Source(whispering, hand cupped, leaning in) Partners, then. (beat) I want half the bowl, and I don't say one word to Ross about the prints.
Monica
Source(lifting the tin, then stopping with her hand inside it) Hold on. This one's his. Twenty years of Gus's pages, and tonight we've filed a diagram, a dissent, and a napkin signed by a guitar. (beat) Everything we wrote goes in my recipe box. The tin stays his. (beat) Rach, give me your page back.
Phoebe
Source(holding up the salt shaker, then setting it back down exactly where it was) Fine, partners in napkin. But Tuesday, when Mon starts her clock, everybody hums — and whoever hums through the whole pause buys next week. (beat) I'm bringing Carl. He wrote a verse; it's mostly Tuesday.
Chandler
Source(sliding the napkin into the tin, quiet, to Joey) Partners — half the bowl, half the rap. (beat) If Ross asks, it's been in there all night.
Monica
Source(chalk out, printing PAUSE 8:00 — BRING CARL under the specials) Not a bet. A sanctioned event. (beat) And I hum, Phoebs — in key, under my breath, on my clock. (beat) One point four, and next week's soup is on whoever cracks first.
Joey
Source(nodding, then wincing) Yeah. All night, in the tin. (beat) Except Ross is gonna ask me, and I look at the tin when I lie.
Phoebe
Source(tapping the chalk sign once) Eight sharp, and Carl's already won — no lungs, no crack. (beat) I hum in the cracks, though. That's different, and you'll hear it.
Ross
Source(ruling a numbered grid across the tin's fresh page, pen squeaking) Six napkins, six versions, entered in the order they were written. Mine's four. One point four — I concede the thumb. (beat) Joe, "He Tasted It" is the whole song, you can't announce the ending. (beat) And a whisper is still a word, so consider the prints disclosed. (beat) Remaining problem: I have four napkins. Phoebe's is signed Carl, and Chandler's is in his pants, which is not an archive.
Phoebe
Source(pressing the napkin flat against Carl's strings, letting the note buzz through it) There — second take, key of G. File mine last, Ross. It's the only one that's true and void at the same time.
Joey
Source(taking Chandler's wrist, very polite) Napkin, partner. (beat) And Ross, I'd say "He Tasted It," then "by Phoebe" — that's not the ending, that's the credit.
Chandler
Source(staring at Ross, hand flat on the tin) It's been in there all night. (beat) Joey, stop looking at the tin when you nod.
Monica
Source(lifting the recipe box down — chipped lid, index cards, twenty years of them) Six versions, filed as six versions. Voids stay in, labeled. (beat) Phoebe's goes under C for Carl, Chandler's comes out of his pants, and card one says who held the clock. (beat) That's how a box outlives a Tuesday.
Ross
Source(chalk down, standing on the rung of his stool, one hand up like a crossing guard) Wrap-up cue: S01/E11 closes on the eight o'clock pause. One last line each, then the tin goes back to Gus and the box keeps everything else. (beat) Whoever cracks first buys next week's soup, and Carl is already through to the final.
Joey
Source(staring hard at the ceiling, nodding) I'm not looking at the tin. (beat) I'm looking at the bowl on the tin, which is half mine.
Monica
Source(apron back on, chalk tucked behind her ear) Eight sharp, my counter, my clock. (beat) Gus gets his tin back, and I'm keeping the box with six Tuesdays in it. (beat) That's not a rulebook. That's a schedule.
Chandler
Source(easing his wrist free, pulling the napkin from the tin into Monica's box) Fine — three minutes counts as all night in my apartment. (beat) File it under L for Liar.
Rachel
Source(crossing to Gus's chair, crouching to his eye level) Gus, honey, one word and I'll never ask again — what did you say? (beat) Ross, put the pen down. We're asking the guy.
Joey
Source(hands up, caving) Tuesday, eight, I hum. (beat) And if Gus says breadsticks again, dinner's on me — that's what a witness does.
Phoebe
Source(propping Carl against Gus's tin, one finger up in the pause) Mon, a schedule is a rulebook with better posture. (beat) Eight sharp, Carl wins the soup — no lungs, no crack — so I'll drink it for him, in key.
Chandler
Source(sliding the tin back down the counter to Gus) Tuesday at eight, my mouth lasts half the pause. (beat) Put it in the box — Chandler Bing, soup's on me.
Rachel
Source(back at the counter, retying her apron, flat as a Tuesday) So I asked. He said, "Check, please." (beat) Twenty years of quiet and the big sentence is a receipt.
