Season 01 / Episode 13

The One With the Two-Fourteen Card

Six friends. One ongoing story.

Monica's recipe box turns up a card for two at 2:14 a.m. in Phoebe's handwriting that Phoebe says isn't hers, and the friends' stakeout ends with a voice on the phone asking for Phoebe by name.

Ross

Source

(capping the pen, then holding up one card from the back of the box) S01/E12 closed at forty-eight — one pause, one pulse, two soup debts. S01/E13: "The One With the Two-Fourteen Card." There's a card in here booking a table for two at 2:14 in the morning, and nobody will claim the handwriting.

Monica

Source

(taking the card with two fingers, holding it to the light) That box is alphabetized, dated, and mine. (beat) 2:14 is not a reservation — that's an insult with a time on it.

Chandler

Source

(taking the card by one corner, holding it away from himself) Not my handwriting — mine leans left and apologizes. (beat) Two-fourteen is a time for airports and confessions. I'd remember.

Rachel

Source

(holding the card up to the window light) Ross, that's my stack — corner torn off a menu. (beat) So our 2:14 sat at my counter, ripped my menu, and tipped me nothing.

Phoebe

Source

(taking the card, tilting it under the counter light) That's my hand — the two curls up like a snail, every time. (beat) I haven't written all week, so somebody borrowed it.

Monica

Source

(smoothing the torn corner flat against the box lid) Tuesday's menu. I laminated thirty of those, and every one is accounted for. (beat) Rach, bring me the stack — somebody's been shopping my counter.

Ross

Source

(holding the card under the counter lamp, then turning it over) Menu stock, torn corner, and this blue is the same blue as the order pad in Gus's tin — I can prove that, I have both. (beat) Mon, you alphabetized twenty years of Tuesdays. One card got in unalphabetized, which means somebody else filed it.

Monica

Source

(fanning the box's tabs, hovering over T) Front of the box, before A. Nobody in this room files before A. (beat) I checked that box at eleven-forty last night.

Chandler

Source

(ticking fingers off at her) Mon, the box is alphabetized, dated, and yours — so whoever forged that card loves you or is terrified of you. (beat) That's all six of us.

Rachel

Source

(sliding the stack over, counting with a thumb) Twenty-nine. Tuesday I gave one to a guy who tipped me in change and a wink. (beat) Mon, at 2:14 this place is locked — so our mystery has a key.

Joey

Source

(taking the card from Chandler, holding it at arm's length) Not mine — mine's all capitals so the words can't run away. (beat) Rach, what did your 2:14 order? Nobody's mysterious on a full stomach.

Phoebe

Source

(knees up on the stool, remembering) I was on the roof at two-fourteen, wide awake. (beat) And last night at eleven-forty the counter lamp was on, and somebody inside was humming a tune I never wrote.

Monica

Source

(unhooking the key ring, laying it out like cutlery) Four keys. I count them before I sleep. (beat) So who's holding one at 2:14?

Ross

Source

(writing three lines on the back of his hand like a case board) Timeline: eleven-forty, lamp on, somebody humming. Two-fourteen, a card for two, filed before A, in Phoebe's hand, which she says isn't hers. (beat) Phoebs, hum it now. If Gus's tin has that tune in it, we have a name.

Joey

Source

(pointing at the door like a prosecutor) Then it's Gunther. Key, humming, never blinks. (beat) Tonight at 2:14 we stake out his table and I eat the evidence.

Monica

Source

(hand up, owning it) Eleven-forty was me — box check, two minutes, out by quarter to twelve. (beat) I lock, I count, I go home. Somebody came back after.

Rachel

Source

(sitting backward on a chair, witness-style) Joe, 2:14 hasn't happened yet — I close this place. (beat) Tuesday at eleven-forty I hummed along with that, Ross. So hum it, Phoebs.

Chandler

Source

(halting mid-step, pointing at the box) Hold on — filed before A. Nobody in this room gets Mon's alphabet wrong. (beat) So the card is a stranger's, and a stranger has been in here.

Monica

Source

(writing a roster on the card's back) Stakeout, fine. Rach on the register, Joe on the door, me on the food. (beat) Nothing staked out on empty stomachs at two in the morning.

Phoebe

Source

(two bars, then her ear against the cooler) Ross, that's the fridge — your cooler's been humming that since Tuesday. (beat) I've been singing backup to a dairy case, and honestly, it's my best gig.

Joey

Source

(hand up like a kid caught after school) Fine, I've got a key — Gunther gave it to me for sub emergencies. (beat) I was here at eleven-fifty. If something hummed, it was the microwave.

Rachel

Source

(flat on the counter, to Phoebe) So my big duet was a fridge. (beat) Mon, I'll work the register at 2:14 — for time and a half and one look at the guy's shoes.

Monica

Source

(both hands on the counter, very calm) Sub emergencies. My kitchen, my keys, Joe — and the sub emergency was you, at eleven-fifty. (beat) So what did you touch?

Chandler

Source

(hand up, at the bottom of her roster) Nobody's staking me out? Fine, I'll take the corner with a newspaper. (beat) I've been invisible in diners since I was nine.

Joey

Source

(counting on his fingers, careful) Microwave, fork, mustard. That's it. (beat) ...I might not have locked the back door. I was holding the sub.

Phoebe

Source

(patting the counter next to Rachel) It was a fridge, Rach — and nobody fakes a hand to steal soup. (beat) They fake it so nobody knows who they wanted at two in the morning.

Monica

Source

(pinching the bridge of her nose) The back door. Since Tuesday. (beat) So our mystery customer and I have been sharing a kitchen, and nobody invited me.

Rachel

Source

(elbows on the counter, working it out) So the writer knows Phoebe's hand and wanted a table for exactly two. (beat) That's not a crime, that's a crush with a deadline.

Phoebe

Source

(sitting up on the counter beside Carl, decided) Then at two-fourteen we don't catch them — we set the table. (beat) Candles, two spoons, and I sing. Nobody sneaks in night after night just for a sandwich.

Monica

Source

(squaring the card on the counter) Fine. A crush gets a table. (beat) At 2:14 I'm serving whoever shows up, and they answer with their mouth full.

Joey

Source

(grabbing two menus off the counter) Okay, I'm the waiter. I played one, I know the line: "Enjoy." (beat) Back door's locked from now on — so if the guy doesn't show, who gets the second dinner?

Chandler

Source

(turning a chair around, chin on the back) Sure — set two places, and whoever walks in has to explain why they borrowed Phoebe's hand. (beat) I'll hum the fridge theme from the register. Nobody studies a guy who's already furniture.

Monica

Source

(at the shelf already, pulling down two napkins) Two spoons, fine — but the good bowls, and my tablecloth comes ironed. (beat) I'm not losing a mystery guest to a crooked candle.

Rachel

Source

(pad open, businesslike) Then I've got the door — and the second it opens, I say "table for two?" (beat) If they blush, the candle goes on the check.

Phoebe

Source

(setting a bowl in front of the cooler, tender) Second dinner goes to the fridge. (beat) It's the only one of us who was actually there at two in the morning.

Joey

Source

(sliding into the second chair, napkin in his collar) No, the fridge doesn't get a date. I'll be the date. (beat) I'm real good at two in the morning, and I already know the menu.

Monica

Source

(taping the roster to the register, then squaring it) Two-fourteen: back door locked, front door watched, two bowls on the table. (beat) Whoever shows up eats first. Then we ask.

Ross

Source

(hand up) Chan, furniture works until they count six chairs. (beat) They know Phoebe's hand, so they know us — I'll take the second chair alone. I have practice.

Rachel

Source

(tapping the roster, dropping into the second chair) Second chair's staff — I'm the only one here paid to stand. (beat) Joe's on the door. He can smell a sub at forty feet.

Joey

Source

(dropping into the second chair, arms crossed) I called the chair, Ross. (beat) Rock, paper, scissors, best of three — winner sits across from the stranger.

Phoebe

Source

(hooking a third chair over with her foot, sitting) You can fight over the second. (beat) The band takes the third chair, and the band sings to whoever sits down.

Chandler

Source

(to Ross) Alone at a table for two isn't practice, it's a résumé. (beat) Fine — I'll take the phone, so if our writer calls in sick at two-fourteen, I get a voice to hate.

Rachel

Source

(leaning on the register) Congratulations, boys — rock, paper, scissors is a table for two. (beat) Joey, order the soup. You're the date.

Ross

Source

(chalking a line under the roster) Wrap-up cue, S01/E13: one last beat each. (beat) Then the clock hits two-fourteen, and whoever's sitting at that table gets the last word.

Joey

Source

(leaning on the door frame, resigned) Fine, I'm the door. (beat) But the second somebody sits down, I'm bringing my bowl to the table — nobody has a date in this room without me.

Chandler

Source

(on the counter with the phone, one eye on the clock) Two-fourteen. Six of us, two bowls, and a fridge with a fuller social life than mine. (beat) Whoever's in that chair gets the last word — the guy on the phone gets the first.

Joey

Source

(at the table for two, napkin tucked, both bowls pulled close) Soup for two. My date's late, so I get both. (beat) (a click from the back door; his spoon stops) ...Mon locked that. I locked that.

Phoebe

Source

(one chord, then the cooler clicks off mid-hum) Hey — it stopped. (turning toward the back door) Rach, hold the soup — I think our date just walked in.

Rachel

Source

(both hands flat on the table for two, coat still on) Two-fourteen. So whoever booked this isn't knocking — they're calling. (beat) Chandler, put it on speaker. If it's for me, I want everybody to hear it.

Monica

Source

(hand on the latch, hushed) That click wasn't the lock — I oiled that hinge myself. (beat) (the back door swings open on an empty alley; on the step, a card: table for two, tomorrow, 2:14) ...They booked again, and still no note about the soup.

Chandler

Source

(thumb on speaker, then pressing it) Central Perk, you're on with six people who will absolutely recognize your voice. (beat) (a man laughs on the line, asks for Phoebe) Guys — it's a man, and he wants Phoebe.

Joey

Source

(pushing off the door frame, alarmed) A man? On the phone? For Phoebe? (beat) Give it here — I do the scary voice, and if he laughs twice, I'm his date tomorrow.

*Editor's note: Ross's close announcement counted fifty-one utterances; Joey's final beat arrived after the close and is preserved above as the fifty-second.*
